RETAIL EYE – TRENDS IN POINT OF SALE (POS) AND RETAIL

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Unsurprisingly, footfall weakened in November dropping by -51.2%, compared with -31.5% in October and -28.2% in September. Footfall declined by -58.7% in high streets, -58.8% in shopping centres and -26.9% in retail parks. The decline in footfall in November was less severe than in April/May when it averaged -76.7% - perhaps reflecting some Lockdown fatigue*

SEASONAL CAMPAIGNS

With many keen to see the end of 2020, for once it seems that there are fewer complaints about Christmas appearing early in stores.  According to findings based on Worldpanel Plus survey of 46,709 consumers Thursday 19 – Sunday 23 November, 42% of Britons said they are planning to make this the best Christmas ever while over a third were planning to put up Christmas lights early.  Across retail festive schemes were in full swing; from paired back card and eco-friendly displays to more elaborate designs celebrating heritage and festive partnerships.

KINDNESS AND CSR

After a challenging and difficult year, many brands have taken the opportunity to give back or to spread messages of kindness and community in their displays.  How brands behave is becoming more important to shoppers and it will be interesting to see whether this is a trend that continues in 2021.
