RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

FOOTFALL

The UK retail sector experienced a 1.3% decline in footfall in March 2024 compared to the same month in 2023, according to data from BRC.* This marks a slowing of its decline from the 6.2% decrease observed in February.* UK high streets witnessed a 1.5% year-on-year reduction in footfall but improved from the 9.3% fall seen in the previous month.* 

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day spend was expected to rise this year with over half of consumers intending to buy gifts.** Despite price remaining a key concern, shoppers were forecasted to spend £1.7bn. This is a 1.1% increase on last year.**

EASTER

UK consumers were set to spend £1.9 billion this Easter, a 4% increase on 2023. Spend on Easter food and drink was expected to drive the uplift.** The proportion of shoppers planning to purchase at least one  item this year increased by 6.8% to 69%, compared to 2023. This marks the highest level of intended consumer participation in three years.**
