RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

The three bank holidays in May, including the extra one in honour of the King’s Coronation, helped footfall jump 3.3% across all UK retail destinations compared to the same month in 2022.* An overall rise of 1.1% in footfall in May compared to April followed a rise of 7.2% from March to April – the first time that footfall has increased in two consecutive months since August 2022.*

THE CORONATION

The King’s Coronation gave a boost to sales in the month and the event was widely celebrated across retail. Despite pressures from rising costs, shoppers made the most of the additional bank holiday in May and sales at the grocers rose by a significant 16% during the week of the Coronation, adding an extra £218 million to sales through the tills.**

SUMMER

May also saw retail encourage shoppers to think ahead to summer. Campaigns focused on outdoor living and preparing for summer getaways.
