RETAIL EYE – TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

In the last full week of August, footfall in UK retail destinations increased by 4.9% from the prior seven-day period. Comparing footfall to the same week in 2020, the number of shopper visits was 14.2% higher overall and 23.4% more in high streets. Footfall for w/c 23rd August was noticeably higher than in the same week in 2020, when the August bank holiday also occurred, particularly in high streets; and the gap from 2019 was the smallest of any week since the start of the pandemic in March 2020.*

BACK TO SCHOOL

Back to School was highly visible this month with stores keen to provide one stop shops for all children's’ needs including uniform and stationery. Wilkos also featured a ‘Uni shop’ helping students to create a home away from home.

SUSTAINABILITY
Activity across the high street was subdued this month, as is generally the case with August, with Sale season in full swing. There were however still examples of both CSR initiatives and environment best practice as we have seen throughout the year.
