RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Footfall rose 7.8% week-on-week for the seven days from 20 March, which marked two years since the UK’s first lockdown.* The week was still down 15.9% compared to 2019's pre-pandemic figures.* Coastal towns were up 16.6% on the previous week, with market towns also performing particularly well with an increase of 11.5%.* High streets performed best with an increase of 9.8%, compared to retail parks which increased 5.8%, and shopping centres, up 5.5%.*

MOTHER’S DAY

Mother’s Day was highly visible across both the grocers and the high street this month with gift ideas for spoiling Mum taking centre stage. It was good to see wider campaigns across the high street this year with lockdowns affecting Mother’s Day as an occasion for non-essential retailers over the last two years. Spend on Mother’s Day in the UK has been on an upward trend from 2017 – 2021 (where the last data is from). In 2019, Brits spent around £1.23 billion on Mother’s Day, an increase of more than 25% from 2017.** 2021, saw a further rise in Mother’s Day spending - in total, the population spent approximately £1.34 billion on Mother’s Day.**
