RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Overall retail footfall in the UK fell slightly by 1% in the week to 11 December 2021 and was 82% of the level seen in the equivalent week of 2019*. How the rest of the month plays out for retail is difficult to predict due to restrictions and potential shopper hesitancy. On 10 December Springboard predicted that footfall in central London would be 50% for the following 2 weeks, compared with the equivalent period in 2019.  In market towns, footfall is predicted to slump by 19%, Shopping centres are predicted to be 28% lower, while footfall in retail parks will only be 2% down on 2019.

CHRISTMAS

As retail displays were installed before the emergence of the Omicron variant, many retailers and brands reflected a hopeful feel, preparing people for a more normal Christmas than 2020. Vibrant colours and positive messages about celebrating together with family and friends were evident.
