RETAIL EYE - TRENDS IN RETAIL AND POS

Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Footfall worsened slightly in January to 20.8% below 2019’s level, from a 18.6% drop in December vs. the 2019 level. However, there was a slight bounce back on the high street in the second half of the month.* Across the month the high street remained the worst hit retail location, with footfall down 26.1% on 2019. This compares to a 25.5% fall in shopping centres and 4.3% in retail parks.*

SALE
Retailers and brands were focused on sale activity in January. The ubiquitous red and white signage and vinyls were very much in evidence but there were a few campaigns which stood out for being a little different.

NEW BEGINNINGS

The New Year saw retailers and brands supporting shoppers with their resolutions. Fitness, well-being and healthy eating were all  emphasised in the month – particularly with the growing popularity of Veganuary. The Chinese New Year was also visible across retail.
