Every month we capture what is happening in retail – understanding key themes and trends for POS.  This snapshot guide helps to bring the high street to your desk monthly.

FOOTFALL

Total UK footfall increased by 2.2% in February compared to the previous month as the return to the office and normal life boosted shopper numbers despite stormy weather. The BRC-Sensormatic IQ Footfall Monitor for the month found total UK footfall decreased by 14.9% in February compared to the pre-pandemic figures of 2020, a 2.2% improvement from January and better than the 3-month average decline of 17.2%.

VALENTINE’S

Love was in the air in February and the majority of retailers embraced the season. Gifting inspiration was very much in evidence and some retailers also demonstrated a more inclusive approach to celebrate all relationships. According to research by fashion retailer ISAWITFIRST, more than a third of Brits will spend £40 on Valentine’s Day gift this year.  A Finder.com survey in 2020 estimated that circa 25 million cards are sent for Valentine’s Day each year and that the UK spent over £1.4 billion on greeting cards in 2020.
